1The Freedom of Information Act
About this course
The ability to access information held by public authorities is an extremely important right in an open society.
The Freedom of Information Act (FoIA) sets the framework to allow information to be accessed and disclosed in the public domain. It is a legal requirement that public authorities adhere to the act and correctly deal with requests for information as outlined in the FoIA.
This short online Freedom of Information Act training course is designed for those working for public authorities who have to deal with requests of this nature. It offers information on the FoIA, an organisation’s responsibilities under the Act, employee responsibilities under the act, how to handle complaints, and a number of other key areas surrounding the Act.

LOVED that I could read transcript
Thank you for allowing me to simply read the transcript! I learn better by reading and it lets me learn at my own pace and review easily. It's hard for me to focus when I need to listen to a voice speaking continually. Excellent course with quality questions for the test.
Not too bad

Why is this training important?
Compliance
It’s important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 is a piece of UK legislation that creates a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by most UK public authorities.
This Act is in addition to other access rights, such as access to personal information under the Data Protection Act 2018.
The main features of the FoIA 2018 are:
- a general right of access to recorded information held by public authorities, regardless of the age of the record/document
- a duty on every public authority to adopt and maintain a scheme, which relates to the publication of information by the authority and is approved by the Information Commissioner
It is important that those who are on the receiving end of requests for information have a strong understanding of the Act, its core provisions, how to handle complaints, and a number of other areas surrounding the Act.
