Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that crystallises into lots of tiny fibres. In this section, we will take a look at what asbestos is and why it is dangerous, the 6 different types of asbestos, the history of asbestos, who is at risk, asbestos-containing materials, as well as asbestos-related diseases.
Section 2
In this section, we take a look at practical steps to reduce and remove the risks at work. We focus on Asbestos Management Plans (including asbestos removal from qualified HSE teams), what to do if you unexpectedly find/discover/disturb asbestos, what to do if you disturb asbestos and show a man's story who worked with asbestos for years.

What is asbestos and why is it harmful?
Asbestos is the name given to a group of natural minerals which have been used for centuries. Valued for its durability and heat resistance, asbestos was often used as insulation in buildings, as flooring and roofing, and sprayed onto ceilings and walls. However, when broken down into tiny fibres and breathed in, asbestos turns into a hazardous material which can lead to a host of life-threatening diseases – including asbestosis, pleural thickening, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. When was Asbestos banned in the UK?
In 1999, Asbestos was fully banned from use in the UK. However, despite this, it’s still responsible for over 5000 deaths every year. Many buildings constructed before the year 2000 may still have asbestos in them, meaning that it’s absolutely crucial that anyone who might be exposed – such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, and builders – must have asbestos awareness training.

clear and precise to what it is and how to mange it
Very informative and important that all are aware, especially the younger generation
Very informative and whilst I was aware of the risks of Asbestos, it is great to have a reminder of how dangerous it is and to not be complacent. Asbestos was a big issue when I started work as it was only then banned from use. So I think its key that the younger generation who are new to the construction industry are made aware, as it isn't in the news these days. Also as a professional consultant we are often given less 'on site' training, than those working on site daily.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 – which came into force on 6th April 2012 – requires that the responsible person (or duty holder) in all non-domestic premises is responsible for ensuring that people who work there or visit the premises are protected against ill health from asbestos exposure. This includes all non-domestic buildings – industrial, commercial or public buildings – for example, offices, schools, hospitals, factories, shops and warehouses.
