Section 1
This section covers the first of the four Ladder Safety Steps. We look at what you need to consider when you’re selecting a ladder – including the BSI Kitemark, and the ladder’s size, material and duty rating.
Section 2
For the second step, we look at how you can conduct a ladder Pre-check correctly on step ladders and non-self-supporting ladders (including extension ladders). We also demonstrate how to find and mark a ladder’s Balance Point.
Section 3
Here, we take you through the setup process. We provide a ‘Low Shoulder Carry’ and ‘1:4 Ratio’ demonstrations, we explain the setup “do’s and don'ts” for all ladders, and we also include how to extend and set up an extension ladder.
Section 4
This section gives you concise practical steps for using a stepladder, a single ladder and an extension ladder. We discuss Ladder Etiquette and provide a bullet list of how to lower a ladder safely. There are also additional resources on Ladder Maintenance and Storage for wooden, fibreglass and aluminium ladders.
About this course
Falling from a height is incredibly common and incredibly dangerous, and at least a third of all fall injuries involve ladders. This makes them one of the largest causes of accidents and injuries – both in the workplace and at home; Ladder Safety Training is therefore essential.
You don’t need to be formally qualified to use a ladder, but you do have to be competent. This Ladder Safety Course has been created to help strengthen the necessary skills and knowledge you need to use ladders safely.
There are various types of ladders and you need to make sure that you are picking up the right one for the situation. As well as the set up of a ladder, you’ll also need to consider how you dismantle and carry them from location to location.
It’s split into four short sections, with each one looking at the Ladder Safety Steps – Ladder Selection, Ladder safety Pre-Check procedures, Ladder Setup and Ladder Use.
Incorrect ladder safety procedures may result in workplace injuries and end up costing your business in compensation. Training helps to avoid the worst case scenario.

Work at Height Regulations 2005 (WAHR)
Brought in to prevent deaths and injuries caused by falls from height. Employers and anyone in control of work carried out at height need to make sure that work is properly planned, supervised and more importantly, carried out by competent people.
Employees have general legal duties to take reasonable care of themselves and others who may be affected by their actions, and to co-operate with their employer to enable their health and safety duties and requirements to be complied with.

How to use a ladder on an uneven surface?
When using a ladder on an uneven surface, it’s important to measure the ladder, and make sure it’s the right size. Check that it’s tall enough to reach your work area and that it can support your weight.
* A stabiliser for the ladder should be used to help it stay on level on uneven ground.
It is important to take your time when climbing the ladder and be extra cautious. Keep your body centred and avoid leaning too far to any side. * Ensure you’re keeping 3 points of contact on the ladder at all times with hands and feet.
How to use a ladder in high winds?
If you’re using a ladder in high winds it is important to take extra precautions as this area of work can be dangerous. Here are some ladder safety tips when using a ladder in high winds:
Check the weather: It may seem okay to climb up now but if the winds worsen it is best practice to postpone the job until the weather improves.
Again with an uneven surface, finding the right ladder for the job required, Fibreglass ladders are recommended when working in wet or windy weather conditions as they are less slippery than normal ladders.
Once you have set the ladder up it is important to secure it to an anchor point such as a tree, post or a building. Once secured a ladder stabiliser is then recommended to be in place to keep you safe.
