Who is more likely to be at risk from slips, trips and falls?
It’s important to understand that everyone in a workplace is at risk of a slip, trip or a fall – anyone can have a workplace accident. Even visitors to the workplace may also be at risk and when they are in your workplace, you are responsible for their safety. However, certain job roles can put staff at more risk of having a slip, trip or a fall including:
- Cleaning staff (more susceptible to slips and trips)
- Those who regularly use ladders or stools (more likely to have a fall)
- Those who regularly lift as part of their jobs (more likely to trip, resulting in a fall)
What are common hazards and how can I prevent them from causing harm?
- Poor lighting – make sure that workplaces are well lit and emergency exits also have good lighting
- Loose or trailing cables – Make sure these are hidden or use cable ties to keep them away from walkways
- Uneven or damaged floor surfaces – Promote a culture of ‘see it, report it’ and act upon these things asap. Try to use signage to stop people from walking on the surface temporarily.
- Slippery floor surfaces – Clean immediately and use wet floor signs to divert people around the surface.
- Incorrect use of ladders/stools – Train staff on how to use ladders and stools correctly and encourage staff only to use them if absolutely necessary.
As an employer, it’s important that if you have an accident or a near miss, you report it to your employer promptly. They can use this information to prevent future accidents. You should also report any spillages, damaged floors.
Something that is often overlooked is tidiness of peoples workstations. Keeping your workstation tidy can prevent slips and trips.
