About this course

Ensuring effective communication is a fundamental component of providing high-quality care services.

As a care worker, you will need to be aware of a range of different ways communication can take place. Individuals communicate through a range of different methods and these can be either verbal or non-verbal.

Examples of types of communication are:

  • Body language
  • Facial expressions

Our communication skills training for healthcare professionals teaches carers how to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues in a care setting. It looks at speaking with confidence and conviction, listening to difficult people, identifying your preferred listening style and much more.

This course works alongside our 14 other awareness courses that make up the Care Certificate Standards.

You can access our free worksheet that has been designed to accompany our online Communication in Care Training course. In each section, there is a box for you to
tick when you have watched the relevant slide in our course. You can also take notes that will help you during your practical assessment at work.

This communication in care course equips learners with the knowledge that’s required to be put into practice in the workplace, whereby they can do the ‘practical’ part of their training, followed by having the Care Certificate supplied to them by their management as they meet the required standards. These courses provide part of training but practical training is still required to obtain the care certificate.

Each of our courses ends with a multiple-choice test to measure your knowledge of the material.

This Communication in Care Training course concludes with a 20 question multiple choice test with a printable certificate. In addition, brief in-course questionnaires guide the user through the sections of the training and are designed to reinforce learning and ensure maximum user engagement throughout.

As well as printable user certificates, training progress and results are all stored centrally in your LMS (Learning Management System) and can be accessed any time to reprint certificates, check and set pass marks and act as proof of a commitment to ongoing legal compliance.

What does my certificate include?

Your Communication in Care Certificate includes your name, company name (if applicable), name of course taken, pass percentage, date of completion, expiry date and stamps of approval or accreditations by recognised authorities.

Why is this training important?

Compliance

It’s important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.

Standard 6 of the 15 standards that make up the Care Certificate is Communication. Workers in the care sector are shown what is expected of them in the Care Certificate, which is an agreed set of standards that employees need to pass. It forms part of an induction programme that should be covered if you are new to the care sector.

The Care Certificate was developed by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health.

This communication skills training for care managers, carers, and healthcare professionals will only improve the care given to patients. With effective communication in care settings, the efficiency of carers can develop with a better understanding of what’s being asked and what needs to be done.
A 2018 survey revealed that 21.7% of the patients asked were concerned about communication, either from staff to patient, staff to staff, or patient to staff. This highlights the importance of patient to staff care as well as staff to staff.
