Section 1
Modern Slavery is an umbrella term that covers various words like slavery, servitude, forced labour & human trafficking. There are many different categories that sit within these types and they often overlap, so a victim of one type of slavery can often be a victim of two or three. Throughout this course, we will be sharing case studies to raise awareness of the most common types and to show you how to spot the signs.
Section 2
In this section, we’ll discuss what you and your organisation can do to help eradicate it and will cover; how to report any concerns or suspicions, compliance with the Modern Slavery Act, working practices and policies and your organisation's supply chain. We also include a couple of extra case studies from two industries that are at high risk for modern slavery.
About this course
Modern Slavery is an on-going issue within the United Kingdom. In 2017, the National Referral Mechanism reported that over 5000 potential victims were submitted, from 116 different nationalities. Which is a 35% increase from 2016. In fact, there are more slaves in the world today (40 million) than ever before.
Modern-day slavery is a crime. It includes slavery, human trafficking, forced or compulsory labour and servitude. People subject to slavery have to work against their will and do not have freedom of choice.
Someone is defined as being a victim of slavery if they are:
- forced to work
- controlled or owned by an individual or organisation that uses physical or mental exploitation
- dehumanised and is bought or sold as ‘property’
- is constrained or has restricted freedom of movement
- deceived into servitude
This online Modern Slavery training course aims to educate users on identifying signs of modern-day slavery and to give confidence to people to speak up about it.

Great to know about, what slavery is in modern terms?
There may be scenarios when you think one of being kind and helpful to other but on the other hand, they may be exploiting others who are working for them or their organization in order to get services without reasonable payout. Awareness, observation and instincts are the key to help underprivileged and suppressed ones.

What is the Modern Slavery Act 2015?
The Modern Slavery Act 2015, is designed to combat modern-day slavery within the UK.
What are the aims of the modern slavery act?
The Act was created in order to help law enforcement to punish those who are involved in these acts and also increasing the amount of support that victims receive. As well as other factors, the Act aims to;
- create an independent anti-slavery commissioner
- require businesses over a certain size to publish any actions taken to ensure there is no modern slavery within their business or supply chain
- introduce a defence for victims
- assign an obligation to the Secretary of State to produce statutory guidance for victims.
The Act will “send the strongest possible message to criminals that if you are involved in this disgusting trade in human beings, you will be arrested, you will be prosecuted and you will be locked up.”

Penalties for non-compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2015 can have significant consequences for individuals and businesses involved in modern slavery offenses or failing to meet their obligations. Here are key points you need to regarding the penalties:
Criminal Offences
The slavery act introduces criminal offences related to modern slavery which can include everything from forced labour to human trafficking. Any individuals found guilty of a modern slavery offence will be subject to lengthy prison sentences, substantial unlimited fines or both.

The court may also impose an ancillary order to further address the consequences of the offence to ensure justice.
