How can you help yourself out of burnout?
Posted 4 years ago
Burnout is a state of exhaustion as a result of prolonged high levels of stress. It’s a direct consequence of a busy working and/or personal life.
See our blog for more information on burnout and its effects on employees and employers.
When stress levels aren’t managed correctly, anyone can be affected by burnout, and it’s important that you have an understanding of how you can help yourself out of burnout.
With that said, we have put together some of our top tips for helping yourself out of burnout…
Revisit your goals
It is crucial that the goals you set for yourself are SMART:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Relevant
- Time-based
Focussing specifically on the “attainable” rule, it’s crucial that you set yourself realistic goals in order to avoid putting extra pressure on yourself.
Recognise how you manage your time
A key part of managing your stress levels involves good time management. If you find that you do not have enough time in your day to complete your tasks, it can lead to high levels of stress, and therefore burnout.
We offer an online Time Management Training course that can help you understand the principles of good time management, offering a range of techniques you can use to find out what works best for you.
Additionally, we have created a free-to-download time management tips & tricks sheet that offers our top tips for strong time management.
Have an end-of-work routine
This tip is particularly useful for those that are working from home and struggle to separate work and home life.
Having an end-of-work routine can help you to dedicate working hours to work and personal time to yourself.
A good work-life balance is crucial as it enables you to take a break from work pressures, whereas those with a bad work-life balance might feel permanently stressed and under pressure, which we know is the cause of burnout.
There are many ways to approach an end-of-work routine, including:
- Turning your mobile notifications off
- Not looking at your emails
- Going for a walk/run
Essentially, anything that you can turn into a routine that doesn’t involve work. In the long run, completing this routine should subliminally trick your brain into switching off from work mode!
Identify areas of stress
Finally, we have what may seem like the most obvious step.
Although it may seem obvious at first, actually taking the time to consider what might be stressing you out is an effective way of taking positive action to reduce levels of stress.
Dedicating time to think about areas of stress can help you consider smaller issues that you may have not considered otherwise. Once you can identify areas of stress, it becomes far easier to take action to reduce your stress levels.
