Section 1
This section looks at how the decision to have a first aid appointed person was made. It explains their role and duties. It looks at the accident record book, confidentiality, making sure all staff know how first aid is handled and it looks at what should be in the first aid kit.
Section 2
The second section of our Appointed First Aid course explains exactly what must be done in a first aid emergency situation. It tells the first aid appointed person what to look out for so that they can say to the emergency services what they need to know and also explains how to call the emergency services. It encourages a calm, confident, assurance in the first aid appointed person – the last thing a casualty needs is to see someone panic and look like they don’t know what to do during an emergency response!
About this course
For many smaller low-risk companies, the legal minimum for first aid provision is to have someone in their company who simply looks after first aid – this is the First Aid Appointed Person.

Why is First Aid Appointed Person training important?

It’s important to comply with the law and know how it affects you and the way you work.
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 requires employers to:
- Provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment
- Provide adequate and appropriate first aid facilities
- Provide adequate and appropriate first aid personnel
- Provide Risk Assessments
- Inform Employees of the First Aid arrangements
An employer shall provide, or ensure that there are provided, such equipment and facilities as are adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for enabling first-aid to be rendered to his employees if they are injured or become ill at work.
The legal minimum requirement is that someone is appointed to look after first aid requirements. They are not required to administer first aid and so do not need full first aid training, but they must be present to take charge if someone is injured or becomes ill at work. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 must be followed by ALL workplaces, including those with fewer than 5 employees.
