About this course
In the UK alone, around 64,000 children have epilepsy. That’s about 1 in every 220 children. This means that on average, there could be 1 child with epilepsy in every primary school and 5 children with epilepsy in each secondary school.
This Epilepsy Training for Schools title provides the information you need to support a child at school with epilepsy, explaining the different types of seizures, the symptoms and most importantly, what to do to help a child who is having a seizure.
It also looks at the responsibilities, policies and procedures and the well-being of children with epilepsy. This online epilepsy course is split into 5 sections and includes a step-by-step guide of what to do and what not to do when a child is having a seizure, making it easier to digest and follow.

A very comprehensive guide to epilepsy.
A very useful overview of epilepsy, think that it went into a bit too much detail of the different types and their technical names but otherwise a very good course.

Descriptions and definitions of seizure types have changed over the years- this course is informative easy to remember and concise enough that the learner stays enthusiastic about learning about it.
I appreciated the no nonsense presentation of the course, also the clarity of the explanations of different types of seizures . The naming of which has changed over the years, and it was good to have an informative, concisely put refresherupdate about this. I also felt that the information given highlighted what is particularly important to know when dealing with any individuals with Epilepsy, in a non scary way. ..You'd know exactly what you needed to do even if supporting someone for the first time ever after this course. It was also very relevant for someone working in a SEN school.

It’s interesting
It’s always so beneficial to recognise the signs of a child having a seizure and knowing what to do in that situation. Always stay calm and don’t panic , always if you can reassure the child if at all possible. I always enjoy learning about epilepsy because I’ve gone through it myself and know what it is like.

It’s important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.
On 1st September 2014, a new duty came into force under Section 100 of the Children and Families Act 2014, for governing bodies of maintained schools, proprietors of academies and management committees of PRUs, to make arrangements for supporting pupils at their school with medical conditions.
This requires that pupils at school with medical conditions should be properly supported so that they have full access to education, including school trips and physical education.
Governing bodies must ensure that arrangements are in place in schools to support pupils at school with medical conditions. And that school leaders consult health and social care professionals, pupils and parents to ensure the needs of children with medical conditions are properly understood and supported.
The Gov.uk website states that:
It’s against the law for a school or other education provider to treat disabled students unfavourably. This includes:
– Direct discrimination, for example refusing admission to a student because of disability
– Indirect discrimination, for example only providing application forms in one format that may not be accessible
– Discrimination arising from a disability
– Victimisation, for example suspending a disabled student because they’ve complained about harassment
