About this course

In this School Trips Training for Organisers and Support programme we take a look at some of the things that must be considered when planning and delivering school trips, both in the UK and abroad.

School Trips for Organisers and Support Staff is a programme for the person who organises the trip, or anyone who helps out on a trip, including school staff and non-school staff acting as volunteers and helpers.

It may seem that there’s a lot to think about when planning a school trip, but this programme has been written as a guide to the process. It will support any procedures and guidelines already in place in a school, and will explain how to practically manage the risks associated with leaving the classroom.

There are two programmes on School Trips. This is the second. The first programme is School Trips for Management (the people in a school who are responsible for school trips.) We recommend that the person organising a trip should do both courses.

Really helpful!

Really helpful!

very good.

This will definitely help with trips.

Dreadful

I have done this several times and each time I lose the will to live part way through. Why not (a) only require it to be done say every three years; and (b) offer a proper preLearning test which if passed means you don’t have to sit through it. I assume that the objective is to ensure that trip leaders are competent … I’m not convinced this course is fit for purpose.

clesr and concise

Why is this training important?

Compliance

It’s important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.

The Common Law Duty of Care and The Children Act 1989 require that teachers do all that is reasonable to protect the health, safety and welfare of pupils.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires all employees to care for their own health and safety and that of others. In the case of school trips this means that teachers must take reasonable steps to protect their own health and safety, that of the pupils they accompany and also that of anyone else who may be affected by the delivery of the trip.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires risks to be appropriately assessed and measures put in place to reduce or eliminate risks.

The Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations 2004 requires providers of certain adventure activities to be licensed.

The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 holds an organisation responsible if their activities were organised or managed in such a way that this caused or contributed to the death of someone to whom they had a duty of care.
