Why is this Abrasive Wheel training important?

Compliance

It’s important that you comply with the law and know how it affects you and how you work.

The main legislation relevant to using abrasive wheels is the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (or P.U.W.E.R). Firstly, this document makes it clear that any work equipment and machinery must be fit for purpose. Secondly, it requires that anyone using a piece of equipment – in this case, an abrasive wheel – must receive adequate training and safety information before using that equipment.

Every employer shall ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken. – The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, Section 9 (1)

The regulations deal with the work equipment and machinery used every day in workplaces and aim to keep people safe wherever equipment and machinery are used at work. PUWER replaces the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992, carrying forward the existing requirements with a number of changes and additions.

Abrasive Wheel Safety Training FAQs

  • Abrasive wheels are specialised tools used for cutting, grinding, or finishing various materials such as metal, stone, or concrete. These wheels are typically composed of abrasive particles bonded together with various materials like resin, rubber, or metal. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including grinding wheels, cutoff wheels, and abrasive discs, and are commonly used in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and metalworking to shape or finish workpieces.
  • Our Abrasive Wheels online course can be completed in just 30 minutes on any device, anytime.
  • Abrasive wheel training is a legal requirement in many industries due to regulations and safety standards. These require employers to provide adequate training to ensure that workers can safely handle and operate abrasive wheels, minimising the risk of accidents and injuries in the workplace.
  • Our online Abrasive Wheels training offers multiple benefits for your business and employees, including reducing injuries, improving Health and Safety compliance, and raising workers’ awareness of associated risks. By teaching proper handling techniques, this training reduces accidents and promotes a safety-conscious culture.
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) is the UK legislation that applies to the use of abrasive wheels. This states that all those using abrasive wheels must be fully trained and qualified to use the equipment.
  • Currently, there are no set legal requirements for abrasive wheel retraining or certification since there’s no universally recognised validity timeframe for health and safety training. The HSE states that refresher training should be carried out whenever it is felt necessary (for example a change in working conditions, the introduction of new equipment, staff, or working practices, or when it is felt necessary to undertake refresher training). CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine, SMAS, and other members of the SSiP scheme all recommend that re-training is carried out every 3 years.
