About this course

Standard 9 of the Care Certificate demonstrates that although your job role may not directly require you to work with these individuals, it is important to have an awareness of learning disabilities, dementia and ill-mental health while working in Care.

Nearly two-thirds of people say that they have experienced a mental health problem. These can include; depression, anxiety, psychosis. As well as these, both dementia and learning disabilities are more prominent in care settings and Care Workers will require awareness training so that they are able to identify symptoms and signs of these problems and so that they are able to treat the individual in the correct way, and with compassion.

Standard 9 of the Care Certificate – Mental Health, Dementia & Learning Disabilities – ensures that staff:

  • Understand the needs & experiences of people with mental health problems, learning disabilities or dementia
  • Understand the need to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for individuals with mental health problems, learning disabilities or dementia
  • Understand the need to change care delivery relating to someone who may have a mental health issue, dementia or learning disabilities
  • Know the importance of early detection of dementia, mental health needs and learning disabilities
  • Understand legal frameworks, policy and guidelines relating to mental health needs, learning disabilities and dementia
  • Understand mental capacity

For more information take look at our Mental Health and Wellbeing courses available. Mental Health Awareness is an essential piece of training for all staff and is just as important as physical health.

This course works alongside our 14 other awareness courses that make up the Care Certificate Standards.

You can access our free worksheet that has been designed to accompany our online Mental Health, Dementia & Disabilities in Care Training course. In each section, there is a box for you to tick when you have watched the relevant slide in our course. You can also take notes that will help you during your practical assessment at work.

This course equips learners with the knowledge that’s required to be put into practice in the workplace, whereby they can do the ‘practical’ part of their training, followed by having the Care Certificate supplied to them by their management as they meet the required standards. These courses provide part of training but practical training is still required to obtain the care certificate.

Overall very good

There was one question, that made no sense at all. So, my answer was really a gamble and it was incorrect. Never mind, I passed anyway.

Excellent

The course has given me the knowledge and understanding some things that can cause fire like sticking too many plugs on one socket, hot oil and candles unattended .Raise alarm when there is a fire, not to take lift .

It’s important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.

Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disabilities in Care is Standard 9 of the 15 standards that are in the Care Certificate. It forms part of an induction programme that should be covered if you are ‘new to care’.

The Care Certificate was developed by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health.
