Informative and common-sensical

I work in a Public Library where we serve a whole range of community representatives all the time. Many are upset about perceived delays or unhelpful responses from various internal officers so these transferrable skills are very welcome. I often find it helpful to listen when someone is angry rather than attempt to anticipate what they are saying or impose a fixed solution. Doing this is often resented as the person may be too worked up to accept the answer at that point. Often, people want to feel visible and to know that someone understands their problems. I find that listening gets better with practice and using words – and tone – which imply that you sympathise with the customer without being or coming over as patronising.
