About this course
Sitting at the centre of the respiratory system are the lungs. When we breathe in, they collect the oxygen we’ve inhaled and transfer it into our bloodstream, carrying it to every one of the nearly 40 trillion cells in our body. They also collect waste carbon dioxide from our blood, so we can release it when we exhale.
This is known as diffusion and it’s a vital job that literally keeps us alive! In fact, if our lungs stopped working for as little as 4 minutes, our brain would begin to experience permanent damage, and in just another 4 minutes after that, we’d be dead. This is why it’s so important that we keep our lungs healthy.
For some of us, one of the biggest threats to our lungs comes from the work we do. Certain activities and working environments can pose a huge risk to our respiratory system, if we don’t take the proper precautions. Things like cutting, sanding, or polishing materials like stone or wood; working with solvents; or being exposed to certain kinds of dust, fumes, vapours, and mists, can all cause permanent damage, if we’re not careful.
This Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) Training course explores what RPE is and why it’s so important, what different types of RPE exist and what they’re used for, how to properly use, maintain, clean, and store RPE, and what legal responsibilities you and your employer both share.
The course can be completed in just 30 minutes and provides a printable certificate upon completion.

Why is this training important?
Compliance
It’s important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.
Under the Health & Safety at Work Act, as well as other legislation, your employer is legally responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and for ensuring the health and safety of you, your colleagues, and anyone else who might be affected by the work you carry out.
This means they need to do a risk assessment to identify hazards, assess the risks they pose, and establish control measures to reduce any risks.
There are many reasons why your employer might provide you with RPE and make sure that you wear it. Some reasons include when:
- There’s still a risk of exposure even after all other control measures are in place
- There’s a short-term or infrequent risk of exposure and implementing other controls is impractical
- Other control measures are being put in place
- You need a safe exit during an emergency
- You’re carrying out maintenance or emergency work
- There’s a temporary failure of controls
- You’re being rescued by emergency workers
Your employer is also responsible for providing you with information, instruction, and training to keep you safe and on how to properly use, clean, store, and maintain any RPE they provide to you.
To do this, they may choose one person, or a group of people, to be responsible for RPE at work.
This designated person, or people, may be responsible for overseeing RPE policies and procedures, training staff, deciding where safety signs should be placed, and helping contractors, visitors, and new members of staff understand your organisation’s RPE policies and procedures.
But it’s not just your employer who has responsibilities, you also have certain legal duties too. For example, you have a duty to:
- Always use RPE that’s been provided to you
- Use RPE appropriately and in line with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Follow all safety policies and procedures created by your employer
- Store, clean, and maintain RPE in line with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Report any faulty, damaged, or inadequate RPE to your employer
- Participate in any training provided by your employer
- Take part in fit testing for tight-fitting face masks
